AI-generated evidence

A platform deciding thousands of claims cannot forensically examine every image. Once generated images became good enough to pass a casual look, the only workable response was to exclude the whole category and put the burden of authenticity on the submitter.

That is a reasonable design decision with an uncomfortable side effect: the safest move for a reviewer who suspects enhancement is to refuse rather than investigate. The wider set of April 2026 changes is covered in Airbnb's 2026 rule changes.

Clearly excluded: images created by a generator, composites assembled from other photographs, and anything run through a tool advertising AI enhancement or restoration. Also excluded in practice: brightness, contrast and sharpness edits applied to make damage more visible, because the reviewer cannot tell an honest adjustment from a dishonest one.

Not excluded: using more light when you photograph, taking more frames, cropping to show the same pixels, and having a professional describe the damage in writing. The distinction is between changing the image and changing the conditions in which you capture it.

Modern cameras combine multiple exposures, apply scene detection and reconstruct detail as a matter of course. Hosts are not choosing this, and it can make an ordinary photograph read as processed. The mitigation is to turn off enhancement modes you do not need, shoot with the standard camera app, and light the subject properly instead of relying on the phone to rescue a dark frame.

If a file is challenged, the answer is provenance rather than argument: original files, intact photo metadata, a two-sentence account of how they were captured, and an independent invoice. The full response is in accused of faking evidence.

Where a photograph genuinely cannot show the damage, stop trying to make the photograph do more work and add a different kind of evidence. A trade assessment describing a fracture pattern, a pest report naming a species and severity, a moisture reading, a remediation invoice: none of these can be dismissed as enhanced.
